Demystifying Git Merge vs Rebase

Every developer eventually faces the classic Git dilemma: should I merge or should I rebase? While both tools are designed to integrate changes from one branch into another, they do it in fundamentally different ways. Choosing the wrong one can clutter your project history or cause major headaches for your team.

Understanding Git Merge

When you use git merge, you are performing what is known as a "non-destructive" operation. Existing branches are not changed in any way.

Bash:
git checkout feature
git merge main

Pros:
  • Preserves the exact chronological history of your commits.
  • Safe for public branches because it never rewrites history.

Cons:
  • If you merge main into your feature branch frequently, you end up with a lot of "merge commits" that can clutter the commit graph.

Understanding Git Rebase

Rebasing, on the other hand, takes the commits from your current branch and "re-plants" them on top of the base branch tip. It essentially rewrites your project history.

Bash:
git checkout feature
git rebase main

Pros:
  • Results in a wonderfully clean, linear project history.
  • Makes git bisect much more effective for finding bugs since every commit builds cleanly.

Cons:
  • Rewrites history. If you push a rebased branch to a remote repository, it forces you to do a git push --force, which can disrupt other developers working on the same branch.

The Golden Rule of Rebasing

Never rebase public branches that other developers are working on. Rebase is fantastic for cleaning up your local feature branches before submitting a pull request, but once a branch is shared, stick to merging to avoid severe merge conflicts and sync issues for your team.
