Optimizing React State with useDeferredValue

Managing heavy UI renders in React can sometimes lead to stuttering and dropped frames, especially when dealing with complex lists or real-time filtering. While useTransition helps manage state update priorities, useDeferredValue is the go-to hook when you need to defer updating a non-urgent part of the UI.

What is useDeferredValue?

useDeferredValue is a React hook that lets you defer updating a less-important piece of state. It is very similar to debouncing or throttling, but it is integrated directly into React's concurrent rendering engine.

Instead of forcing a timeout or relying on fixed delays, React will render the deferred value in the background *after* the urgent updates (like typing in an input field) have finished painting to the screen.

Practical Example: Filtering a Large List

Consider a scenario where you have a search input filtering a list of 10,000 items. Without optimization, every keystroke triggers both the input state update and the heavy list filtering simultaneously, causing noticeable input lag.

Here is how you can implement useDeferredValue to keep the input snappy:

JSX:
import { useState, useDeferredValue, useMemo } from 'react';

function SearchList({ items }) {
  const [query, setQuery] = useState('');

  // Defer the query value so it lags slightly behind the urgent input state
  const deferredQuery = useDeferredValue(query);

  // The heavy computation uses the deferred query
  const filteredItems = useMemo(() => {
    return items.filter(item =>
      item.toLowerCase().includes(deferredQuery.toLowerCase())
    );
  }, [items, deferredQuery]);

  return (
    <div>
      <input
        type="text"
        value={query}
        onChange={(e) => setQuery(e.target.value)}
        placeholder="Search..."
      />

      {/* Optional: Visual indicator that content is stale/updating */}
      <div style={{ opacity: query !== deferredQuery ? 0.5 : 1 }}>
        <ul>
          {filteredItems.map(item => (
            <li key={item}>{item}</li>
          ))}
        </ul>
      </div>
    </div>
  );
}

How It Works Under the Hood

1. Initial Render: On the first render, deferredQuery matches the initial query value.
2. User Types: When the user types 'a', the query updates immediately. React triggers a re-render.
3. Concurrent Split: React sees the useDeferredValue hook. It renders the component *first* with the updated urgent query (keeping the input responsive), and schedules a background re-render with the new deferredQuery.
4. Completion: Once the heavy filtering finishes in the background, React updates the DOM with the filtered results.

When to Use It

  • Expensive computations: When filtering, sorting, or mapping large datasets based on user input.
  • Skipping unnecessary effects: You can combine useDeferredValue with React.memo to prevent child components from re-rendering with urgent props.
  • Network-driven UI: When updating secondary UI elements that depend on rapidly changing data streams.

By leveraging useDeferredValue, you let React handle the heavy lifting asynchronously, resulting in a much smoother user experience without writing custom debounce logic.
