How to Fix Slow Database Performance with B-Trees

Database performance often degrades as datasets grow, and the most common culprit is poor indexing strategies. Without proper indexes, the database engine is forced to perform full table scans, reading every single row to satisfy a query—a process that destroys throughput and spikes latency.

Understanding B-Tree Indexes

The default index type in most relational databases (like PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQL Server) is the B-Tree (Balanced Tree). A B-Tree index maintains sorted data and allows searches, sequential access, insertions, and deletions in logarithmic time $O(\log n)$.

When you create an index on a column:
SQL:
CREATE INDEX idx_users_email ON users(email);
The database builds a separate data structure containing the indexed values and pointers to the actual table rows (heap). When a query filters by email, the engine navigates the tree structure instead of scanning the whole table.

Composite Indexes and the Leftmost Prefix Rule

When querying by multiple columns, a single-column index isn't always enough. This is where composite (multi-column) indexes come into play. However, they operate under a strict rule known as the Leftmost Prefix Principle.

Consider this index:
SQL:
CREATE INDEX idx_orders_customer_date ON orders(customer_id, order_date);

This index will be utilized for:
  • Queries filtering by customer_id alone.
  • Queries filtering by both customer_id AND order_date.

However, it will not be efficiently utilized if you query *only* by order_date. The database engine reads the index from left to right; therefore, the leading column must be present in the query predicate for the B-Tree to be traversed effectively.

Identifying Missing Indexes with Execution Plans

Never guess what needs an index. Always rely on the query execution plan using EXPLAIN or EXPLAIN ANALYZE:

SQL:
EXPLAIN ANALYZE
SELECT * FROM orders
WHERE customer_id = 42 AND order_date >= '2023-01-01';

Look out for these warning signs in the output:
1. Seq Scan on table: The database is scanning the entire table. If the table is large, consider adding an index.
2. Bitmap Heap Scan / Bitmap Index Scan: The engine is combining multiple indexes to satisfy the query.
3. High Cost values: Compare the estimated cost before and after applying a new index.

The Hidden Cost of Indexes

While indexes speed up SELECT statements, they come with a write penalty. Every INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operation requires the database to not only modify the base table but also update every associated index.

  • Rule of Thumb: Avoid over-indexing. Tables with heavy write concurrency (e.g., logging tables, real-time analytics ingestion) should have the absolute minimum number of indexes required to support critical read queries.
  • Unused Indexes: Periodically audit your database for unused indexes. They consume disk space and waste CPU cycles during write operations.
